Welcome to the Albert Lea Area Schools Special Services website.
Our Special Services department recognizes the importance of offering and designing programs which address the unique needs of our students. The focus of our department is to provide students with the tools to become successful. Special Education staff and programs are located at each of the school buildings in the district.
The Special Services department includes a wide array of programs and services designed to meet the needs of our students with disabilities. Special education and support services are available to all students, ages Birth-21 who have been identified as needing special instructional services.
Individuals with Disabilities Education Act (IDEA) is a law which ensures:
-All students with disabilities are entitled to a free and appropriate public education.
-Students with disabilities should be educated to the maximum extent possible with non-disabled peers.
-An Individual Education Plan (IEP), an Individual Family Services Plan (IFSP) or an Individualized Interagency Intervention Plan (III-P) will be written for all students with disabilities. They include information on the present level of performance, special education needs, individual goals and objectives for each student, with criteria to determine achievement of those goals and objectives.
-The State of Minnesota mandates eligibility criteria for all disabilities; students must have a disability and be in need of special education to be eligible for services.
The Albert Lea Transitions Program is for students with disabilities who are between the ages of 18-21 and have completed their 12th grade year at Albert Lea High School. This program offers a functional and vocational focus of skills necessary for increased independence at home, in the workplace, and the community. Click here for more info
